Champions League Round of 16 draw: Manchester City faces Real Madrid; Chelsea set for PSG

Two of Europe's giants will meet in the Champions League Round of 16 following Friday's draw in Switzerland.

Manchester City, who qualified automatically via their finish in the League Phase, will meet Real Madrid, who advanced through the playoffs after beating Benfica over two legs. The two clubs have met in each of the past four Champions League campaigns with Real Madrid advancing in three of them. Last year, it was the LaLiga side moving on following a 6-3 aggregate victory in the playoffs.

Reigning champions PSG took care of Monaco during the playoffs and will now face Chelsea in a rematch of last summer's Club World Cup Final. The two sides have not met in the Champions League since the 2015-16 Round of 16, which saw the Parisians advance 4-2 on aggregate.

Four other English clubs automatically qualified for the Round of 16. Top-seeded Arsenal will play Bayer Leverkusen; Liverpool will meet Galatasary; Tottenham is set to face Atlético Madrid; while Newcastle will take on Barcelona.

Bayern Munich finished second in the League Phase table, three points behind Arsenal, and will face Italian side Atalanta.

Bodø/Glimt, who have wins over Manchester City, Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan (twice) in their past four Champions League matches, have been paired with Portuguese side Sporting.

Friday's draw also locked teams into a bracket, giving them an idea of who they could face should they progress in the tournament.

The quarterfinals could provide such matchups as PSG-Liverpool, Real Madrid/Manchester City-Bayern Munich, and Barcelona-Atlético Madrid.

The top eight teams that automatically qualified for the Round of 16 following the League Phase — Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Tottenham, Barcelona, Chelsea, Sporting, and Man City — were seeded. The eight sides that qualified for this round through the playoffs — Real Madrid, PSG, Newcastle, Atlético Madrid, Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen, Galatasaray, and Bodø/Glimt — entered the draw unseeded.
