Texas A&M's recruiting success in accordance with the 2027 cycle isn't surprising for those who have paid attention, as head coach Mike Elko and his revamped coaching staff have already landed ten commitments, and are a finalist to land the No. 1-ranked cornerback in the class, contending with Alabama for five-star CB John Meredith.
Already landing a commitment from blue-chip four-star cornerback Raylaun Henry, who, despite being heavily pursued, remains "100% committed" to the Aggies, the potential addition of John Meredith would make the Aggies' future cornerback room beyond elite, on paper, at least. Heading into the 2026 season, the Aggie defensive back room is loaded and will not include 2025 five-star cornerback Brandon Arrington, who, like Meredith, is talented enough to see the field in Year 1.
Late last month, Rivals recruiting insider Steve Wiltfong, who continues to give the Aggies a slight edge in Meredith's recruitment, stated that it will come down to Texas A&M and Alabama heading into the spring football season, as Meredith will reportedly take two visits to College Station over the next two months.
"Texas A&M and Alabama top the list for the Fort Worth (Texas) North Crowley blue-chipper who has a keen eye on Ohio State, Texas and others.
On the field, Meredith will play at North Crowley during his senior season and is already turning heads this offseason at various camps, including this weekend's Under Armour camp, showcasing his elite change-of-direction skill set. Complemented by his 6'2" frame, there's a reason Meredith is considered the top-ranked defensive back in the 2027 class.
Under Mike Elko, Texas A&M's secondary vastly improved during the 2025 season, but still allowed too many explosive plays in the regular-season finale loss to Texas, leading to safety Tawfiq Byard and cornerback Rickey Gibson transferring.
According to 247Sports Composite, Meredith is currently positioned as the No. 1 overall player, cornerback, and prospect in Texas.
