Lou Holtz: Football Legend's Golf Passion

Football coaching legend Lou Holtz, who passed away at age 89, was also an avid golfer who won the member-member championship at Augusta National in 2005.

Holtz, best known for his football coaching career at schools like Notre Dame and South Carolina, was a single-digit handicapper golfer. He hosted a SiriusXM radio show called 'Holtz in One' and was a member at both Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orlando and Augusta National. When hired at William & Mary in 1962, the school made him golf coach to boost his salary by $300, despite admitting he 'didn't even know how to keep score.'

The 2005 Augusta National member-member victory remained one of Holtz's proudest moments. 'I'm on the plaque on the wall, which is my greatest accomplishment,' he said. Holtz developed friendships with golfers like Lee Trevino and had a memorable story about the 1986 Masters when he was initially on the cover of Sports Illustrated but was replaced by Jack Nicklaus' historic win. He often shared humorous golf anecdotes that revealed his passion for the sport beyond the gridiron.
