Drivers Question 2026 F1 Rules, Yet Still Push Limits

Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Lando Norris say the 2026 F1 rule changes reduce pure driving, yet all drivers confirm they still push the cars to the limit of grip.

In a recent interview, the four active world champions highlighted that the new 2026 regulations, which emphasize energy management and reduce downforce, have altered the nature of F1 driving. Verstappen called it “not Formula 1,” Hamilton described it as “ridiculously complex,” Alonso said a chef could drive the car at that speed, and Norris noted it is “not the purest form of driving.” Despite these comments, all drivers—including Russell, Antonelli and Bearman—agreed that they remain on the limit of grip most of the time and that skill still determines race outcomes.

During pre‑season testing in Bahrain, drivers noted that corners previously limited by grip are now more power‑limited, but the overall approach remains the same: brake late, take the corner at maximum speed, and exit as fast as possible. The consensus is that while the rules change strategy, the core challenge of driving at the edge remains intact.
