Footy great Chad Townsend was treated by a doctor during a 'scary' medical ordeal while flying to Las Vegas for the NRL season opener.

The 35-year-old premiership winner with the Cronulla Sharks was traveling to Sin City ahead of the Cowboys vs Knights and Bulldogs vs Dragons matches on Sunday when the incident occurred.

Townsend's flight to Las Vegas was interrupted when he required medical attention, with the NRL star describing the experience as 'scary' as he prepared for the upcoming NRL season.
