Padres Back Campusano as No. 2 Catcher

San Diego Padres manager Craig Stammen has named Luis Campusano as the team's No. 2 catcher for the upcoming season, giving him a clear opportunity during spring training to secure the role.

Stammen has consistently expressed confidence in Campusano, citing his hard work and Triple-A success from last season. The 27-year-old catcher received a vote of confidence from the manager after getting a new haircut, with Stammen noting Campusano has 'a little bit of a runway to take control of that job.'

Campusano faced challenges in 2024, hitting .227 with 8 home runs and 40 RBI in 91 games. In 2025, he didn't catch any games, only appearing as a DH with no hits in 21 at-bats. With Freddy Fermin expected to be the primary catcher, Stammen emphasized the importance of giving Campusano significant playing time to prevent burnout.
