Liverpool handed massive advantage as Galatasaray hit with away supporter ban

Galatasaray supporters will be banned from attending the away leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Liverpool at Anfield following a UEFA disciplinary ruling.

The sanction was imposed after incidents involving Galatasaray fans during their recent European match against Juventus in Turin.

UEFA confirmed that the Turkish club have been prohibited from selling tickets to supporters for their next away fixture in European competition.

The punishment means there will be no travelling Galatasaray fans in the away end at Anfield for the decisive second leg.

UEFA’s disciplinary panel ruled that the sanction was necessary following several crowd disturbances during the Juventus match.

The governing body cited the throwing of objects, the lighting of fireworks and general disorder in the away section of the Allianz Stadium.

Reports from Italy stated that flares and firecrackers were set off during the game.

Some disturbances were also reported outside the stadium before kick-off.

Local media said clashes occurred between Galatasaray supporters, Juventus fans and police.

A man and his daughter were reportedly taken to hospital for checks after being struck by a firecracker thrown from the away end.

UEFA also issued a financial penalty as part of the ruling.

Galatasaray have been fined €40,000 for the incidents.

The Turkish champions have confirmed that they intend to challenge the decision.

In a statement, the club said they will appeal the sanction through UEFA’s disciplinary process.

Despite the controversy in Turin, Galatasaray progressed to the Champions League knockout stage.

They secured qualification with a 7-5 aggregate victory over Juventus across the two legs.

The upcoming tie against Liverpool will therefore take place without the usual travelling support from Istanbul.

Liverpool will host the second leg at Anfield after the opening match in Turkey.

The absence of away fans for Galatasaray removes one of the most vocal travelling contingents in European football.

UEFA’s decision also serves as a warning over supporter conduct during high-profile continental fixtures.
