US hockey legend Hilary Knight on SNL, throws shade at Trump's joke

Hilary Knight and the US women's hockey team are getting the last laugh.

A week after leading Team USA to the gold medal, the Wisconsin hockey legend appeared on "Saturday Night Live" with teammate Megan Keller during host Connor Storrie's opening monologue at Studio 8H.

And they showed they can offer up some jokes as well.

The women's hockey duo arrived at the end of the segment that also included men's gold-medal stars Jack and Quinn Hughes.

"It was going to be just us but we thought we’d invite the guys, too," said Knight, wearing her gold medal and jersey.

Keller added: "Yeah, we thought we’d give them a little moment to shine."

Knight's comment was in response to President Donald Trump's "joke" that has put the men's and women's teams in the spotlight this week beyond what they accomplished on the ice at the 2026 Winter Olympics, almost overshadowing their incredible performances.

Trump called the men's team after its 2-1 overtime win over Canada, saying "I must tell you, we're going to have to bring the women's team, you do know that."

He added would add that if he didn't invite the women, "I do believe I probably would be impeached."

That led to laughs in the men's locker room and many, including star player Jack Hughes, having to answer to that in the days to follow.

Knight, who is Wisconsin's all-time leader in goals and led the Badgers to two national championships at UW in 2009 and 2011, and others on the women's team have also been spending time answering for Trump's actions.

Knight called the joke "distasteful" during her appearance on ESPN's "SportsCenter" this week.

The men's team, meanwhile, accepted the invite from Trump to the White House and were introduced at the beginning of the president's State of the Union address on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

The women's team later declined Trump's invitation to the SOTU.

Jack Hughes noted in the SNL segment that the men's team's win was the first in 46 years. Knight, whose five Olympics are a record for any U.S. hockey player, one upped him saying the last time we did this was "two whole Olympics ago."

The stage featured the biggest stars from the US hockey teams.

A toothless Jack Hughes scored the game-winning goal for the men's team in overtime against Canada on Feb. 22.

And three days earlier, Knight's goal not only tied the game to send the game into overtime but it made her the all-time leading Olympic goal scorer in U.S. women's hockey history. Keller then scored the game-winning goal in OT.

Knight was one of two flagbearers for the US at the closing ceremony and also proposed to her girlfriend, Brittany Bowe, a fellow Olympian and speedskating star.

The hockey theme was fitting since Storrie was one of the stars of the HBO Max LGBTQ+ romantic drama "Heated Rivalry."
