Where does Hansi Flick stand among Barcelona’s elite coahes as he nears 100 games in charge

The upcoming La Liga meeting with Villarreal will carry extra meaning for Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.

It will not just be another league fixture. It will mark his 100th match in charge of the club, a milestone that already places him among some of the most successful coaches in Barcelona’s long history.

In his first 99 matches, Flick has delivered numbers that demand attention, having collected 74 victories so far.

That total already puts him ahead of Pep Guardiola’s 71 wins at the same stage and places him third overall in club history after 100 games.

Only Luis Enrique, who managed 80 wins between 2014 and 2017, and Helenio Herrera, who recorded 76 between 1958 and 1960, remain ahead.

A look at the numbers

If Barcelona defeat Villarreal, Flick will reach a 75% win rate, which translates to three victories in every four matches. That is elite territory.

His current record stands at 74 wins, 9 draws and 16 defeats, with an impressive 277 goals scored. That averages close to three goals per game.

Interestingly, when it comes to defeats, Flick’s numbers are not as dominant. He has lost 16 matches in his first 100 games.

Luis Enrique and Ernesto Valverde both lost only nine at the same stage, Guardiola lost 10, and Herrera conceded 14 defeats.

However, Flick still compares favourably to Xavi Hernandez, who suffered 19 losses in his first century of matches.

In attack, though, Flick’s Barcelona stands tall. The 277 goals scored are only bettered by Luis Enrique’s 282. Guardiola (242), Valverde (241) and Xavi (191) trail behind.

Room for improvement

Defensively, there is room for improvement, as Barcelona have conceded 118 goals in 99 games under Flick.

Guardiola’s side allowed just 76 at the same stage, Luis Enrique conceded 77, Valverde 80 and Xavi 95.

Beyond the statistics, from his first day at the club, he made it clear how much he values the academy. Since his arrival, 10 reserve team players have made their debut.

Lastly, Flick has used 37 different players, showing his willingness to rotate and trust the entire squad.

Among those, Jules Kounde leads the appearance list with 91 games, closely followed by Pau Cubarsi with 89 and Lamine Yamal.
