Throughout the off-season, the rumour mill frequently linked the Toronto Blue Jays and Max Scherzer as mutually interested in a reunion. But little did anyone know that perhaps the most motivated party in seeing the three-time Cy Young winner return to Toronto was Scherzer’s eight-year-old daughter, Brooke.
After the New York Post‘s Jon Heyman and Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi broke the news early Thursday morning that the right-hander would, in fact, be signing back with Toronto, Scherzer’s wife, Erica, took to Instagram to share a letter Brooke wrote to the Blue Jays in December.
“Dear Blue Jays,” the letter began.
“I am so sorry that you didn’t win the World Series. I hope that you win next time. I hope my dad is back on the team. My whole family loves spending time in Toronto with our dad. We loved the aquarium, CN Tower and of course, the stadium. I am looking forward to coming back next season.
“Love, Max Scherzer’s daughter.”
After signing with the Blue Jays in the 2024-25 off-season, Scherzer made an immediate impact on the organization, serving as a key veteran figure during the team’s run to the World Series.
While he battled injury through the 2025 regular season, the 41-year-old stepped up to deliver three crucial post-season starts. He worked 14.1 playoff innings, racking up 11 strikeouts with a 3.77 ERA. He also took the ball in Game 7 of the Fall Classic and held the Los Angeles Dodgers to one run over 4.1 innings.
Now, fulfilling Brooke’s wish, Scherzer will run it back with the Blue Jays in hopes of finishing the job in 2026.
Manager John Schneider told reporters Thursday in Dunedin, Fla., that Scherzer still needs to pass a physical to complete the deal. However, he is expected to join the team sometime this weekend and has already been throwing bullpens, per Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith.
