Another offseason with a major need at wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers. It seems like this time around, the Steelers are dedicated to adding depth to their receiver room that they have desperately needed for years now.
During his Tuesday press conference at the 2026 NFL Combine, Steelers general manager Omar Khan took ownership of the poor receiver room in Pittsburgh over the last few seasons. According to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan, the Steelers are already looking at taking a big swing in the way of trading for Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas Jr.
Thomas Jr. was the 23rd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and was nothing short of a star as a rookie, amassing 1282 yards and ten touchdowns in his first season. However, Thomas Jr. had a bit of a “sophomore slump” this past season, in which his production dipped to 707 yards and two touchdowns.
Thomas Jr. was a name that was floated during the trade deadline, and while the Jaguars did not deal him at the deadline, the team did trade for and extending Jakobi Meyers. The Jaguars also invested serious draft capital into two-way phenom Travis Hunter, whose season was cut short due to injury, not to mention the emergence of Parker Washington over the back half of last season.
Despite trading second round pick and giving DK Metcalf a 132 million dollar extension last March, he was unable to be the difference maker Pittsburgh needed him to be, in large part due to a lackluster room around him. If Jacksonville is truly willing to deal Thomas Jr., he would slot in as the most dynamic and exciting young playmaker in the Steelers’ offense, and give new head coach Mike McCarthy a serious receiver duo to work with in his first season in Pittsburgh.
