Tennessee QB Race Opens After Aguilar Denied

Tennessee football will have its fifth different starting quarterback in five seasons after Joey Aguilar was denied an additional year of eligibility.

The Vols' quarterback job is now a three-man competition between George MacIntyre, Faizon Brandon, and Colorado transfer Ryan Staub. Spring practice begins March 16 with MacIntyre holding a slight edge as he's been in coach Josh Heupel's system for a year, while Brandon is a five-star recruit who enrolled in January. Staub has more experience as a former Colorado backup but likely a lower ceiling.

Aguilar's request for a preliminary injunction was denied by Chancellor Chris Heagerty in Knox County Chancery Court on Feb. 20, upholding NCAA eligibility rules. The 24-year-old Aguilar led the SEC with 3,565 passing yards in 2025 but will now pursue a professional career, attending the NFL scouting combine on Feb. 27.
