Baylor's Tyce Armstrong has historic 3 grand slam-game: 'Coolest night of my life'

Tyce Armstrong did not waste any time in the 2026 college baseball season to make history.

The Baylor senior first baseman hit three grand slams in the Bears' opening day 15-2 victory over New Mexico State on Friday, Feb. 13. It was the redshirt senior's Baylor debut after he transferred from UT-Arlington.

Armstrong joined Louisville’s Jim LaFountain (1976 vs. Western Kentucky) as the only college baseball players to accomplish the feat of hitting three grand slams in one game. LaFountain hit two in one inning.

Armstrong hit his first grand slam in the third inning to extend Baylor's lead to 5-0 with a home run that was projected at 401 feet. In the next inning, he hit his second at a projected 407 feet. New Mexico State was able to strike out Armstrong with two runners on base in the sixth inning, but he turned around and added his final grand slam in the seventh inning to extend the Baylor lead to 15-2.

“I’m speechless. I mean, that was the most cool thing I’ve ever been a part of,” Armstrong said postgame (via The Athletic). “I just stuck to my approach, planning on hitting the fastball hard. It’s a great feeling, for sure, and I’m hoping to keep it going, but this team is great. Best team I’ve ever been a part of. Coolest night of my life, for sure.”

Only 13 MLB players have hit two grand slams in a single game, with Josh Willingham hitting two grand slams in 2009 for the Washington Nationals. No MLB player has ever hit three in a game.

The Magnolia, Texas native hit 17 home runs in three seasons with UT Arlington, including a career-high 12 in 2025.

“I wasn’t trying to do it,” Armstrong said of his approach for his final at bat. “I just got the right pitch and didn’t try to do too much.”

The game ended after seven innings due to the run rule. Overall, Armstrong finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three home runs, 12 RBIs, three runs scored and was also hit by a pitch.

Quite an opening day and way to make an impression to a new fanbase.
