Condoms have run out at the Olympic village in Cortina d'Ampezzo even before the halfway point of the Winter Games, according to Italian newspaper La Stampa.
Several thousand condoms with the Olympic logo had been made available for free to athletes, but they are all gone in Cortina, the newspaper reported on Friday.
It is unclear whether they will be resupplied. Around 2,900 athletes are competing at the Winter Games, which run until February 22, with those in mountain events often staying in Cortina. Another village is in Milan for the skating events.
It is now standard at Summer and Winter Games for condoms to be provided in the Olympic villages. This was first done in 1988 at the Summer Games in Seoul. There were said to be about 300,000 condoms supplied at the 2024 Games in Paris, reports said.
La Stampa quoted an athlete, who did not want to be named, as saying: "The supplies were gone in just three days. They have promised us that more will come. But who knows when?"
