Former England star Raheem Sterling joins Feyenoord in surprise move

Raheem Sterling has completed a free transfer to Dutch side Feyenoord on a contract through the rest of the season.

Sterling left Chelsea at the end of January after the two sides agreed to terminate his contract.

The 31-year-old was out of the picture at Chelsea, having last played for the club in May 2024. He spent last season on loan with Arsenal but struggled to make an impact.

"Thanks to my free transfer status, I had the opportunity for the first time in a long time to carefully consider the next step in my career," Sterling said. "I took my time and spoke with several clubs and their head coaches. This was to fully understand the role they envisioned for me and to ensure I could truly add value at a new club."

"After speaking extensively with Dennis [te Kloese, CEO] and Robin [van Persie, head coach], I am convinced that Feyenoord is the place where I will be happy and also a valuable member of the squad.

"Playing abroad is a completely new challenge for me – and one that I am happy to embrace. I am very much looking forward to getting started."

Feyenoord is currently second in the Eredivisie, trailing runaway leader PSV by 17 points.

"It is of course fantastic that we have managed to sign a player of Raheem's caliber after the transfer window closed," Van Persie said.

"His footballing resume speaks for itself: he is a player whose qualities can absolutely make the difference in a match and I am convinced that he will help us achieve our goals in the latter half of the season."

Sterling has scored more than 200 goals as a club and international player, winning numerous trophies during a career that has taken him from Liverpool to Manchester City, then to Chelsea and Arsenal.

He has 82 caps for England, most recently appearing at the 2022 World Cup.
