The Bayern Munich Frauen continued their dominant run this season by blowing their main title rivals VfL Wolfsburg away in their latest match.

Bayern went into the game with a bit more rest than expected, as their previous match against Werder Bremen got canceled due to heavy snowfall. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, were heading into the game with more miles and minutes in their legs, but also brimming with confidence, having dispatched Juventus in the Champions League knockout playoffs a few days ago.

Indeed, Wolfsburg started the game on the front foot, and took the lead with quarter of an hour gone on the clock. French international Kessya Bussy took advantage of a chaotic scramble in the Bayern penalty area and slotted home from close range. Other than the goal, Bayern were the dominant side, but failed to take advantage of said dominance, and went into halftime a goal down.

The start of the second half was not too different from the first half, with Bayern applying pressure but not finding much luck…until the 54th minute. Wolfsburg keeper Stine Johannes made a complete mess of a clearance, punting it straight to Jovana Damnjanović, who had little to do other than tapping the ball into the empty net.

Damnjanović was not done, however, and just two minutes later, found herself on the end of an accurate cross by Franziska Kett. The Serbian international gave Bayern the lead with a sliding finish.

Wolfsburg were in shock after surrendering their lead in the space of two minutes, and Bayern, smelling blood, immediately started playing with the swagger that has characterized their season so far. Barely 15 minutes had passed after Damnjanović’s double when Momoko Tanikawa’s pass found Georgia Stanway, and the European champion finished easily to put Bayern 3-1 up.

Another ten minutes later, Bayern put the icing on the cake. Stanway’s shot from a tight angle was blocked, but Klara Bühl collected the loose ball, turned on the spot, and fired home for Bayern’s fourth and final goal of the match. Bayern thus collected a comfortable three points against their biggest rivals at the Bayern Campus in front of a rambunctious home crowd.

The result puts Bayern at 52 points from 18 games, with an astonishing 71 goals scored and a mere 6 conceded. The champions are currently 14 points ahead of second placed Wolfsburg, although the She-Wolves have a game in hand. Eight games remain in the Bundesliga season for Bayern. The season will pause for the international break, and Bayern will be back in action on the 11th of March, when they visit Hamburger SV in the DFB-Pokal quarterfinals.
