10-man Chelsea lack ‘ruthless’ streak as Burnley steal late point

10-man Chelsea lack ‘ruthless’ streak as Burnley steal late point

Liam Rosenior says Chelsea need to be “more ruthless” in front of goal after dropping points at home to Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.

Joao Pedro gave the Blues an early lead, but they never built on it, which proved costly. The game turned when Wesley Fofana saw red for a second bookable offence in the 72nd minute.

The Clarets secured a massive point when James Ward-Prowse’s outswinging corner found the roaming Zian Flemming, who headed the ball superbly into the far corner.

“We should have won the game,” Rosenior told BBC Sport. “We should have been more ruthless. There was a lack of penetration in the first half, second half we had more moments without the right final pass or finish.”

He added: “The best teams put the opposition to bed. The best teams are ruthless when they have the upper-hand. If you are not ruthless you have to keep a clean sheet. There are not enough clean sheets.

“The four points we have dropped in our last two games shouldn’t have happened. We still should win this game and that is something I need to address very quickly.”

Chelsea have now received six cards in the Premier League this season, the most of any team in the division. That number increases to seven when you include the sendings off of ex-manager Enzo Maresca against Liverpool in October, and eight in all competitions with Joao Pedro’s stoppage-time red against Benfica in the UEFA Champions League in September.

Asked about his side’s ill-discipline, Rosenior responded: “I can only speak on my time with the group so far. Up until today our disciplinary record has been good. It is something for me to solve but I thought it was an unfortunate red card. Even so, you have to see the game out.”
