Report: Tigers, Justin Verlander in agreement on one-year contract

Justin Verlander is going home.

The Detroit Tigers and the right-hander agreed to a one-year contract on Tuesday, per ESPN‘s Jeff Passan.

USA Today‘s Bob Nightengale further reported that the deal is worth $13 million with $11 million deferred beginning in 2030.

Verlander, who turns 43 next week, spent the first 13 seasons of his big-league career with the Tigers, winning a Cy Young and appearing in two World Series with Detroit in 2007 and 2012, both of which resulted in losses.

He was crowned American League MVP in 2011 after pitching to a 2.40 ERA in 251 innings.

The nine-time all-star won his first Fall Classic with the Houston Astros in 2017 and followed it up in 2022, also with the Astros.

Verlander added two more Cy Young Awards to his trophy case while in Houston, capturing the honour in 2019 and 2022.

He spent 2025 — his 20th MLB season — with the San Francisco Giants, where he owned a 3.85 ERA with 137 strikeouts and 52 walks in 152 innings.

The future Hall-of-Famer also spent part of the 2023 season with the New York Mets before returning to the Astros ahead of the trade deadline.
