As the new league year rapidly approaches, one longtime ESPN analyst is pushing the Pittsburgh Steelers to trade one of their best pass rushers for a quarterback.
According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell, the Steelers should attempt to trade edge rusher Nick Herbig for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Tanner McKee, given their similar contract situations.
“If you need a Tanner McKee and you knew someone who obsesses over edge-rushing talent, would you not call the Eagles and say, 'Hey look, Nick Herbig, Tanner McKee — two guys on rookie deals? You get a cost-controlled player for another year who had phenomenal pass-rushing numbers, and we get our quarterback of the future,’” Barnwell said via the NFL Daily podcast. “Does that not seem like a scratch-my-back, I-scratch-yours situation?”
McKee, selected by the Eagles with the 188th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has appeared in six games, where he’s thrown for 597 yards, five touchdowns, one interception, and a 95.7 passer rating.
Barnwell's suggestion, while based on the reality of Pittsburgh's quarterback room, would give the Eagles one of the most underrated edge rushers in the league, while the Steelers get arguably nothing more than a solid backup quarterback.
