‘Leave, or die.’

But the villagers still aren’t welcome. When the local population expresses its anger, can Jess keep everyone safe? And can she hold it together as Steward when someone she loves dies?

One Of Us is a gripping thriller about belonging and acceptance. It’s the third book in the Village trilogy, and the sequel to Sea Of Lies.

MY REVIEW

This is #3 in The Village series and while it can be read as a standalone, you will miss out on quite a bit of a great story.

There is now a slightly uneasy peace in the village, but then there’s a gas exploration in nearby Filey….do they go to help?

The villagers discuss offering sanctuary to anyone that needs help, but we know how that ended last time….with kidnap and death….

But then they are attacked…again….Jess loses someone close to her, and threats come in the form of a brick through a window with a message ‘leave or die ‘…

There are continued suspicions….is Martin trustworthy? And plenty of in fighting as the village council try to protect everyone and help the people of Filey….some of them anyway…

Ruth is struggling, Ben tries to help but it’s not going well…

Can Jess save everyone again? Now they have new members in their society will the council need to grow?

Great characters that I feel I know now having read all three books in the series ( not the prequel yet though) and really want them to have a peaceful, settled life…..not sure that’s going to happen !

Fast paced and engrossing…..I can thoroughly recommend it.

My name’s Rachel McLean and I write thrillers that make you think.

What does that mean?

In short, I want my stories to make your pulse race and your brain tick.

Do you often get through a thriller at breakneck pace but are left with little sense of what the book was really about? Do you sometimes read literary fiction but just wish something would damn well happen?

My books aim to fill that gap.

Sea of Lies by Rachel McLean – Book Review

8DC23800-3A9C-400E-9AE0-1FEDFF1F0ABB

PUBLISHERS BLURB

He abducted her. He fell in love with her. He helped her escape. Can she trust him?

Sarah Evans has returned home after being abducted and held in a dilapidated farmhouse by a group of men.

With her is Martin, who turned against the other men to help her escape. He says he’s not like them, and claims to be in love with her.

Can Sarah trust Martin? Does she share his feelings? Or should she listen to her father, himself deceitful and abusive, and turn her back on the relationship?

Sea of Lies is a chilling psychological thriller about secrets, trust, and a family falling apart.

A standalone sequel to Thicker Than Water

MY REVIEW

“Dawn pulled Sarah into the house and closed the door behind them. She was like a startled animal, breathing in sharp bursts and looking around her with small, quick movements.”

Sea of Lies is the sequel to Rachel McLean’s Thicker than Water. It is easily read as a stand-alone, but for a bit more background to the characters it is worth reading book one….

Sea of Lies continues where Thicker Than Water left off and is the continuing tale of the refugee village community when the kidnapped women return after their ordeal.

They also bring back, Martin….one of those responsible for the kidnapping and this causes a lot of bad feelings within the small community.

We follow the relationship between Martin and the village residents…the police also appear after a murder (or murders ?)….as if they haven’t enough to deal with!

It has some great characters, Sarah and Ruth, the vet turned doctor, it also has domestic violence and fear. It’s a story of relationships, trust and betrayals in this gripping psychological thriller.

I really enjoyed how we get to know more about the village and its inhabitants, but it’s a miserable existence at times with such a shortage of just about everything…

I really want to know more about how the flooding started and why…but I understand there will be a prequel and I’ll be looking out for that for sure….brilliantly creative and atmospheric writing by Rachel McLean and if you like dystopian fiction, you’ll enjoy this….especially those of us in the U.K.

MY REVIEW

Thicker Than Water is the debut novel by author Rachel McLean. A post-disaster thriller.

Set in the near future on the North Yorkshire coast and the UK has flooded, the Thames Barrier breached and a lot of the country is now under water…..the survivors have settled into small isolated communities, scraping a living from the land and what they can find.

They have set up a kind of government where a steward is in charge, but most decisions are made by discussions and votes. Jess is the new steward but her brother, Ben is very upset as he feels he she has stolen his job…how important is family ? And will the be able to resolve their issues?

Ben’s wife, Ruth was a vet but now administers to everyone using the meagre supplies they have…

One night, Jess sees a distress signal at sea and the community manage to rescue three men from the freezing water, and get them to land. There is some discussion as to what to do with them , but they find somewhere far them to stay…while discussion continues…..

But……then they disappear….and some of the women with them, including Ruth…

This is where the story really gets going….there’s kidnap, secrets, and a daring rescue attempt. Who is Robert ? What is his relationship to Ben?

A really gripping thriller with so much happening to keep you totally engrossed…..wonderful expressive writing. I’d love to know more about how the country fell apart in such away and I’ll be looking out for more by Rachel McLean that’s for sure….
