MY REVIEW

Number 5 in the Kind Hearts And Martinets series.

Jack Austin and Mandy are married, he’s retired and enjoying life in their madcap way.

However, the Banana boys, Keef, Jeremy and Brains, would be gangsters and so hilariously dumb. They are working for a serious criminal who has a plan to kidnap Jack’s beloved wife, Mandy……things are going to get messy.

With senior civil servants, the mandarins, being targeted, the plan being to destabilise the government…but why?

When Mandy is kidnapped, Jack comes out of retirement!

This has its serious moments in a clever, twisty plot, it is utterly hilarious- the randomness of Jack’s habit of mixing up his words and his nicknames for everyone really will have you laughing out loud.

Will Jack and Mandy finally retire? I hope not as I love this odd, mismatched couple and their bizarre, madcap lives.

About Pete Adams:

DBB3B2F0-B784-4235-834B-7E9C4F1C82FB

Pete Adams is an architect with a practice in Portsmouth, UK, and from there he has, over forty years, designed and built buildings across England and Wales. Pete took up writing after listening to a radio interview of the writer Michael Connolly whilst driving home from Leeds. A passionate reader, the notion of writing his own novel was compelling, but he had always been told you must have a mind map for the book; Jeez, he could never get that.

Et Voila, Connolly responding to a question, said he never can plan a book, and starts with an idea for chapter one and looks forward to seeing where it would lead. Job done, and that evening Pete started writing and the series, Kind Hearts and Martinets, was on the starting blocks. That was some eight years ago, and hardly a day has passed where Pete has not worked on his writing, and currently, is halfway through his tenth book, has a growing number of short stories, one, critically acclaimed and published by Bloodhound, and has written and illustrated a series of historical nonsense stories called, Whopping Tales.

Pete describes himself as an inveterate daydreamer, and escapes into those dreams by writing crime thrillers with a thoughtful dash of social commentary. He has a writing style shaped by his formative years on an estate that re-housed London families after WWII, and his books have been likened to the writing of Tom Sharpe; his most cherished review, “made me laugh, made me cry, and made me think”.

Pete lives in Southsea with his partner, and Charlie the star-struck Border terrier, the children having flown the coop, and has 3 beautiful granddaughters who will play with him so long as he promises not to be silly.

MY REVIEW

This is #4 in the Kind Hearts and Martinets series by Pete Adams. It can be read as a stand-alone but you are missing out on a lot of fun and mayhem if you haven’t read the other 3.

DCI Jack Austin or Jane as he is known to friends and foe alike, is on his honeymoon in France. He’s finally married Mandy (Detective Superintendent Amanda Bruce).

They are approached by various men of different agencies with tales of murder, conspiracies and of course spooks. From the murder of a banker, to the abduction of a hotel manager….how are these linked?

With Jack’s madcap humour, his habit of mixing up words and frequently speaking his thoughts out loud there are many laughs, but underneath is a social and political commentary…

Will Jack get through a case without being shot this time?

As always a thoroughly entertaining police procedural that makes you think.

MY REVIEW

This is #3 in the Kind Hearts and Martinets series and while it can be read as a stand-alone, you are missing out on some real fun if you haven’t read the previous two.

DCI Jack Austin, Mr Malacopperism himself,  is recovering from being shot. He’s back to his usual self and back at work.

He gives everyone a nickname, gets his words muddled up and says what he is thinking out loud at times too.

This time the tale revolves around the world of finance, and the relatively recent financial collapse was engineered to make a few unscrupulous people a lot of money. He is called to a community policing job, dead dogs are being found in the harbour….but he ends up getting shot again. Who wants him dead? Is there a link to the dogs ? Or is this something else entirely?

So, this is a political thriller, with dead dogs and tutu’s! Full of humour that will have you laughing out loud. There are are darker moments too which makes this a quite unique thriller. Looking forward to the next book already.

MY REVIEW

This is Book 2 in the Kind Hearts and Martinets series featuring DCI Jack Austin.

The story revolves around a domestic terrorist plot to cause civil unrest and political upheaval…..and some rather gruesome murders.

So Jack ( Mr Malacopperism himself) and his team investigate in their unique style. Jack is just recovering after being shot while solving a previous case, and recently back at work. He is such a character, slowly coming to terms with the death of his wife 3 years ago, PTSD and a new romance with Mandy. He really is a crisis magnet!

This is a serious thriller, but full of humour and tomfoolery from Jack, his nicknames for everyone are non stop and he tends to vocalise his thoughts which gets him into awkward moments. A fun thriller with a dark edge. Can’t wait for the next in the series.

MY REVIEW

This is #1 in the Kind Hearts and Martinets series featuring DI Jack Austin.

The prologue has four seemingly unrelated events, a street battle, Chas in the bike shop, Osama’s son is missing and a woman is murdered, her hidden daughter has witnessed it.

Then we meet Jack and his team and for a little while I was unsure how this was going to read, with the constant nicknames and bizarre randomness, but it then starts to come together.

Jack’s constant juvenile humour really builds a sense of this melancholic man, he’s still grieving for his wife and hides this with his sense of fun. For all that Jack is an astute and almost uncanny detective, which his insights and ability to stay one step ahead.

The crimes he and the Community Police unit are investigating are violent and brutal and this humour helps them all deal with it and builds a rare camaraderie. Will they solve their investigation? Will Jack survive? Will he dance again?

A fast paced, violent and dark police procedural with a difference, a main character with a sense of humour that just will not stop….I’ll be looking out for the next in the series that’s for sure.
