Penrith star Nathan Cleary has been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a compound fracture of the ankle in the NRL preliminary final against Newcastle.

Newcastle hooker Phoenix Crossland was sent off for a hip-drop tackle in the 36th minute, leaving Cleary on a medicab and taken to hospital.
