Mary Rand, Tokyo 1964 Gold Medalist, Passes Away at 86

Legendary British athlete Mary Rand has died at age 86. She made history as the first British woman to win Olympic gold in track and field.

Rand, who was born in 1940, secured gold in the long jump at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics with a world-record leap of 6.76m. She became the only British female athlete to win three track and field medals in a single Games, adding pentathlon silver and 4x100m relay bronze to her Tokyo haul.

The former BBC Sports Personality of the Year winner passed away in California. Her teammate Ann Packer described her as 'as good as athletes get,' a sentiment that highlights her enduring legacy in British sports history.
