The ABS system keeps human umpires on the field but adds a limited challenge feature. When a player thinks a call is wrong, they tap their helmet and the system reviews the pitch against the batter’s strike zone using Hawk‑Eye cameras. The result is shown on the scoreboard and broadcast within roughly 15 seconds.
Each team starts with two challenges per nine‑inning game and keeps a challenge if the call is overturned. A challenge is lost if the umpire’s call stands. Only the pitcher, catcher or batter can initiate a challenge, and extra‑innings teams with no challenges receive one new challenge. Position players cannot pitch and challenge.
