Motsepe to meet Kenyan football officials amid FKF wrangles, Afcon 2027 preps

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 10, 2026 – Confederation of African Football (Caf) president Patrice Motsepe is set to meet high ranking officials of the sport in the country amid wrangles in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

The supremo’s visit is part of the Africa Forward Summit, set for Nairobi on May 11-12. sweetbonan.org

He will address the gathering on Monday afternoon on matters African football.

However, interest will be on the outcome of his deliberations on with top officials in Kenya, with the country preparing to co-host next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

It has not been rosy so far for Kenya with the local governing body for the sport torn down the middle into two factions.

FKF president Hussein Mohammed was ousted by his national executive committee (NEC) members last month, in a meeting chaired by his deputy, McDonald Mariga.

The president is accused of complicity in the loss of Ksh 42 million allegedly brokerage fees that were paid to an unlicensed brokerage firm.

The fees was allegedly paid to the firm as license cover for last year’s Africa Nations Championships (CHAN), which Kenya also co-hosted with Uganda and Tanzania.

However, the former Extreme Sports CEO has termed his ouster as illegal, noting that Article 38 of FKF’s constitution empowers only the president to call for a NEC meeting.

He has repeatedly advanced that the meeting that orchestrated the coup d’etat was irregularly convened even as Mariga insists he is the acting president.

A subsequent ruling by the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) – as well as another one by the High Court – has given a reprieve to Mohammed by barring the Mariga faction from implementing any of the resolutions taken at the NEC meeting.

Meanwhile, Mohammed and Mariga have been entangled in showmanship and cold war in the past weeks, with each one attempting to flex their power muscles by ruling and overruling each other in the running of the federation.

Amidst the tug-of-war, Kenyan football enthusiasts are praying that the war does not spill over into the local organising committee (LOC), which is tasked with preparations for Afcon.

The Nicholas Musonye-led committee was reconstituted last month by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya who expanded it by including NEC members as well as Mohammed and Mariga.

It remains to be seen whether Motsepe’s meeting might the panacea that thaws the ice cold relations and allows all parties to re-shift their focus to the most important issue, which is that Kenya be ready to co-host the biggest football event ever staged on its soil in history.

Kabras Sugar RFC overcome KCB Rugby to secure fifth Kenya Cup crown

Kabras Sugar RFC triumphed over an ambitious KCB Rugby with a score of 14-8, securing their fifth consecutive Kenya Cup title in a hard-fought final held at the ASK Showground in Kakamega County.

This victory marked a significant achievement for Kabras, making them the first team in 42 years to achieve a three-peat, joining Nondies and Impala in the exclusive club of teams with five consecutive titles. The win also extended their unbeaten run in the Kenya Cup to 54 matches, dating back to 2022.

Heavy rainfall before kickoff left the playing surface muddy, creating challenging conditions for both teams, although the pitch remained playable.

The match began at a tense pace, with both sides launching early attacks while struggling to gain territorial advantage.

KCB faced an early setback when Festus Shiasi was temporarily sent off for a leading-arm infringement.

The slippery conditions contributed to several handling errors from both teams throughout the opening half.

KCB were the first to threaten the scoreboard when Brian Wahinya attempted a penalty.

His initial effort drifted wide, but he later succeeded with another attempt, splitting the posts to give the bankers a 3-0 lead.

Kabras tried to break through KCB’s defence from a scrum but were thwarted by a disciplined defensive effort.

The hosts were forced into early substitutions, bringing Dukisa, Tanga, and Wekesa into the game.

A kick that went directly into touch brought the opening half to a close, with KCB holding a narrow 3-0 advantage at halftime.

The second half began with another setback for Kabras, as Jeason Misoga was forced off the field due to a head injury.

KCB nearly extended their lead with a dangerous attacking move, but Kabras managed to survive the pressure and eventually levelled the score with a penalty from Ntabeni Dukisa.

Wahinya later missed a penalty attempt that could have increased KCB’s advantage, allowing Kabras to stay within touching distance.

Dukisa, playing his first match of the season, continued to be influential and successfully converted another penalty, giving Kabras their first lead of the contest.

KCB earned a penalty deep inside Kabras territory and opted for a scrum. During the sequence, Ephraim Odour received a yellow card, reducing Kabras to 14 men.
The bankers quickly capitalised on their numerical advantage.

Samuel Asati initiated an attack from the scrum, leading to Festus Shiasi finishing brilliantly in the far left corner for a try.

However, Wahinya failed to convert, leaving the scores tight.

An offside infringement by KCB provided Dukisa with another opportunity, and he calmly slotted the penalty, narrowing Kabras’s deficit to just one point.

KCB’s hopes were further dashed when Olukusi was sent off in the closing minutes, leaving the bankers with just 14 men as the game entered its decisive phase.

Kabras eventually found the breakthrough they needed from a rolling maul, with Hillary Odhiambo touching down for the decisive try.

Although Dukisa missed the conversion, the try pushed Kabras into a 14-8 lead.

The sugar men remained composed in the final moments, despite conceding a late penalty, and successfully defended their advantage until the final whistle.

Kabras ultimately emerged as 14-8 winners, lifting their fifth consecutive Kenya Cup title in front of their home supporters.

‘Ouaddou saw the light and started Makgopa’ – Pirates legend

Orlando Pirates legend Steve Lekoelea has praised coach Abdeslam Ouaddou for finally playing Evidence Makgopa ahead of Yanela Mbuthuma.

The Buccaneers have struggled to find goals from their striker, with their attacking midfielders and wingers providing most goals.

Mbuthuma and Makgopa have only scored just 10 league goals between them.

In the past two matches, Ouaddou have opted to start with Ngwana Sesi upfront and the striker netted against Chippa United.

“I’m happy the Pirates coach finally saw the light and started the game with Makgopa,” Lekoelea told KickOff.

“So, yesterday [Wednesday] he started and won the game for us and even scored.”

“We would be talking a different story as far as the league race is concerned if he started in all those matches.”

Lekoelea said the Buccaneers have the momentum on their side as they battle Mamelodi Sundowns for the league.

“But I’m happy the coach has finally realised his Mbuthuma mistake,” he added.

“After the win, this season’s league title race has become even tighter, unlike last season, where Mamelodi Sundowns won it with five games left.”

Lekoelea said the Buccaneers needed to win their remaining matches to win the league.

“There are only 5km left to the finish line,” he said.

“Sundowns are dangerous with only a few games remaining.

“Pirates need to win all three remaining games to be on the safe side because Sundowns have good players who can easily win all three of their remaining matches.”
