The world champions will surrender top spot if they lose to fifth-placed Scotland by more than 15 points and the No 2-ranked All Blacks beat Italy in Wellington.

A first-ever loss to the Azzurri will see New Zealand fall to third if Ireland beat Japan in Newcastle, Australia.

Fourth-placed France can replace Ireland in third if they beat the No 8-ranked Wallabies and the Irish lose to Japan, providing one of the margins is by more than 15 points.

Japan will enter the top 10 for the first time since July 2023 if they win and Italy and Wales fail to beat New Zealand and Argentina, respectively.

Sixth-placed England could go as high as fourth with victory over Fiji, providing Scotland lose and France are beaten by more than 15 points.

La Fédération portugaise de football a officialisé la nomination de Jorge Jesus au poste de sélectionneur national, quelques jours après le départ de Roberto Martinez. Le technicien de 71 ans prend les commandes de la Seleção avec pour mission de relancer une équipe éliminée dès les huitièmes de finale de la Coupe du Monde 2026 par l’Espagne.

Une immense expérience au service de la Seleção

Jorge Jesus arrive avec un palmarès particulièrement fourni. En 36 années de carrière, l’entraîneur portugais a dirigé plusieurs clubs prestigieux, notamment Benfica, le Sporting CP, Flamengo, Fenerbahçe, Al Hilal et plus récemment Al Nassr. Il totalise 25 trophées, dont trois championnats du Portugal avec Benfica, un sacre en Série A brésilienne avec Flamengo ainsi que des titres en Saudi Pro League avec Al Hilal et Al Nassr.

Sa dernière mission s’est achevée à l’issue de la saison 2025-2026 après avoir conduit Al Nassr à son premier titre de champion en sept ans. Il laisse désormais sa place à Ange Postecoglou pour relever un défi d’une toute autre dimension avec la sélection portugaise.

Un nouveau cycle après Roberto Martinez

En poste depuis le début de l’année 2023, Roberto Martinez quitte ses fonctions après une campagne mondiale décevante. La fédération portugaise espère que l’expérience et le caractère de Jorge Jesus permettront au Portugal de retrouver les sommets internationaux.

Les Lusitaniens n’ont plus atteint les demi-finales d’une Coupe du monde depuis 2006. En revanche, ils ont remporté l’Euro 2016 ainsi que la Ligue des Nations en 2019 et en 2025.

Le défi de l’après Cristiano Ronaldo

Jorge Jesus devra également gérer une transition majeure. Cristiano Ronaldo, meilleur buteur de l’histoire des sélections avec 146 réalisations en 233 apparitions, a annoncé qu’il ne disputera pas une nouvelle Coupe du monde. Le nouveau sélectionneur aura donc la responsabilité de bâtir une équipe compétitive capable de perpétuer l’héritage de la génération dorée tout en préparant l’avenir du football portugais.

The Springboks could be forced into another late change ahead of Saturday’s Nations Championship clash against Scotland at Loftus Versfeld.

According to Rapport, Canan Moodie is an injury doubt for the Pretoria showdown, raising the possibility of another last-minute change to Rassie Erasmus’ match 23.

If Moodie is ruled out, Ethan Hooker is expected to slot in on the left wing.

The Springboks were dealt two major injury blows on the eve of their 45-21 victory over England last week, when Siya Kolisi (hamstring) and Eben Etzebeth (concussion) were both withdrawn.

That forced Erasmus into a significant reshuffle, with Pieter-Steph du Toit moving to lock and taking over the captaincy, while Paul de Villiers and Cameron Hanekom started on the flanks.

According to Rapport, Kolisi is expected to return for next Saturday’s Nations Championship clash against Wales in Durban.

Earlier this week, Erasmus indicated that Hooker was on track to be fit for the Wales Test after recovering from a shoulder injury suffered while playing for the Sharks against the Ospreys in April.

However, if Rapport’s information proves correct, the 23-year-old could be called into action a week earlier.

Hooker last played for the Springboks against Wales in Cardiff on 29 November, where he featured on the right wing.

Pieter-Steph du Toit and Mzwandile Stick can’t wait to see what the next generation of potential World Cup-winning Springboks can do after they run out at Loftus on Saturday.

Du Toit is excited by the responsibility of leading an inexperienced Bok lineup against Scotland in round two of the Nations Championship, with several players already looking to stake their claim for the 2027 World Cup.

“It doesn’t put pressure on me, it actually excites me more,” he told reporters on Friday. “I remember being one of the younger guys myself, with that same excitement.

“When you play for the Springboks at Loftus, you’ve got so much energy, and you want to prove a point, and a guy who wants to do that can be dangerous because he’ll do anything for the team.”

The two-time World Cup winner, set to earn his 97th cap, will form a loose trio with Paul de Villiers, playing just his second Test after debuting last week against England, and Evan Roos on his fifth start.

“Both Paul and Evan are top-quality players, and you can see how much they want to play for the Springboks,” Du Toit said.

“They know exactly what’s expected from them, and then they need to show a bit of X factor, which both of them have.

“Of course the individual has his own goals and dreams, but the best thing each of us can do is to put the team first.”

STICK: Scotland pose bigger threat than England

Stick backs the Boks’ squad depth built by Rassie Erasmus, despite the Scots naming a more experienced match 23.

“All of them have performed well for their franchises and deserve to be rewarded,” the assistant coach said. “It’s a matter of believing in every player in the squad, and when the opportunity presents itself, Rassie is not shy to give players the chance.”

Stick pointed to the experience in the pack as proof that the Bok side is far from raw: “I know when you look at the team sheet, it looks like it’s an inexperienced team but if I look in the front row, you’ve got a guy like Wilco Louw, one of the best tightheads.

“We’ve got a guy like [loosehead prop] Boan Venter, who understands Scotland very well because he was playing there for Edinburgh.

“A lot of these laaities are excited, and I hope we can give the people of Pretoria a good show.”
