Aston Villa reached the Europa League final nearly eight years after Nassef Sawiris took over, when the club was in the Championship.
Aston Villa reached their first major UEFA final since 1982 after beating Nottingham Forest 4-0 at Villa Park on Thursday to win their Europa League semi-final 4-1 on aggregate.
Ollie Watkins opened the scoring in the 36th minute before Emiliano Buendía converted a penalty after the break. Captain John McGinn scored twice in three minutes to secure Villa’s place in the final.
Villa were European Cup winners in 1982, and last won major silverware in 1996, when they lifted the League Cup.
The run comes nearly eight years after Egyptian businessman Nassef Sawiris and American investor Wes Edens agreed to acquire a majority stake in Aston Villa in 2018. At the time, Villa had spent two years playing in the second-tier English Championship after dropping out of the Premier League in 2016.
The Villains will face Freiburg in the final at Beşiktaş Park in Istanbul on May 20.
